When we think about teaching maths skills, formal lessons and worksheets might be the first things that come to mind. However, some of the most powerful mathematical learning happens away from textbooks - around the family table, dice in hand, deep in the strategy of a favourite game. Board and card games not only make learning enjoyable, but they also help develop critical numeracy skills in a natural, engaging way.

Games like Monopoly, Yahtzee, The Game of Life, and Uno are some of my favourite games, and are fantastic examples of this. Each of these games strengthens core maths concepts while players are having fun:

  • Monopoly requires quick mental calculations, managing money, budgeting, and strategic decision-making.

  • Yahtzee sharpens skills in addition, probability, and statistical thinking.

  • The Game of Life reinforces financial literacy concepts, budgeting, and planning for future expenses.

  • Uno builds number recognition, sequencing, and strategic thinking. There are many versions of this game, which is great as you can start with the basic and increase the skill level as your kids master the game! 

Beyond numbers, mathematical thinking also includes spatial awareness and problem-solving. Battleship is an excellent example of a game that enhances spatial reasoning, working with grids, coordinates, logical deduction, and strategy—skills essential for understanding geometry and early algebra.

Incorporating games like these into family routines or classroom activities transforms maths into a meaningful, hands-on experience. Rather than isolated drills, students and children see maths as a living, useful skill—essential for winning a game, planning a move, or outsmarting an opponent.
